How to Read Alignment Triangles and Page Maps on PDF Sewing Patterns

Alignment triangles are the small solid triangles printed at the edges of each tiled page that tell you which sides to join and in which direction. A page map is the numbered grid diagram — usually on a separate cover page — that shows how all those tiles fit together into the full pattern. Together they remove all the guesswork from assembling a home-printed PDF pattern and are the reason a correctly printed pattern assembles in minutes rather than hours of puzzling.

What are alignment triangles on a PDF sewing pattern?

Alignment triangles — sometimes called registration marks, registration triangles, or match triangles — are solid or outlined triangles printed along the cut edge of each tile, pointing inward. They come in pairs: one triangle on the right edge of tile A and a matching triangle on the left edge of tile B. When you place tile B on top of tile A and slide it until both triangles form one complete diamond, the two tiles are aligned perfectly.

Most patterns use triangles, but you may also see:

  • Circles or dots — same principle, just a different shape
  • Crosshair marks — a plus sign used in some commercial and indie patterns
  • Corner crop marks — thin lines at the corner showing exactly where one tile ends and the next begins

Whatever shape the designer uses, the rule is the same: match the marks first, tape second.


What is a page map on a PDF sewing pattern?

A page map (also called a tile map, page grid, or assembly diagram) is a small-scale diagram — usually printed on the first page of the tiled PDF — that shows all the tiles arranged in rows and columns, each labelled with its page number.

A typical page map might look like this:

Page 2 is the top-left tile. Page 13 is the bottom-right tile. The map tells you to print pages 2–13 and arrange them in a 4-column, 3-row grid before taping.

Some patterns label tiles with a letter-and-number code (A1, A2, B1, B2…) rather than page numbers. Both systems mean exactly the same thing — letter is the row, number is the column.


Why do PDF patterns use tiles and page maps?

A full-size sewing pattern — a women's coat, for example — can easily measure 90 cm × 120 cm (35″ × 47″) or larger when laid flat. That is an A0 sheet, which requires a wide-format commercial printer. A page map and alignment triangles allow the same pattern to be split across 20–30 home-printer sheets (A4 or US Letter) and reassembled accurately by hand.

The tiling process introduces one critical risk: if a single tile is placed in the wrong position or at even a slight angle, every measurement downstream is wrong. Alignment triangles exist specifically to eliminate that risk.

This is also why printing at 100% scale — with all printer scaling turned off — is non-negotiable. A tile that is even 2% too small means your alignment triangles will not meet at the right point. Before you assemble anything, always check the test square printed on page 1. It should measure exactly 10 cm × 10 cm (or 4 inches × 4 inches on US Letter patterns). How to read the page map: step by step

Step 1: Find the page map page

Open your tiled PDF and look at page 1 (sometimes page 2). The page map is almost always here. It will show the full grid of tiles as a miniature diagram.

Some indie pattern companies include a separate "print guide" PDF — a short document listing which pages to print, which pages are optional (size layers you are not cutting), and the tile grid. If your pattern came with this guide, use it alongside the main PDF.

Step 2: Identify which tiles you actually need to print

This is a time- and ink-saving step that many sewists skip, and they regret it. The page map usually covers the full pattern for all sizes. If you are cutting a size 14, you may only need a diagonal band of tiles across the grid, not every single page.

Lay tracing paper (or print a blank copy of the page map at small scale) and lightly shade the tiles that contain your size's cutting lines. Print only those tiles. Step 3: Arrange all printed tiles on a flat surface

Before reaching for the scissors, lay all tiles face-up in the correct grid formation on a large table, floor, or cutting mat. Use the page map as your reference. Tile A1 goes top-left; tiles increase left to right across each row, then drop to the next row.

At this point you are checking:

  • Every tile is present (no missing pages from the print run)
  • Every tile is face-up, not mirrored
  • The tile numbers or labels visible on the sheet match the page map

Step 4: Confirm alignment triangles meet across every join

Look at the right edge of tile A1 and the left edge of tile A2. You should see matching triangles pointing toward each other. Slide tile A2 left until those triangles form a complete diamond. The tiles are now aligned on their shared edge.

Repeat across every horizontal join first, then every vertical join. Do not skip any pair — one misaligned join will cascade through the whole assembly.

Pro tip: Work in one direction only. Align the entire top row first (A1–A2–A3…), tape lightly, then work down row by row. Do not zigzag across the grid.

Step 5: Cut or fold the overlap margin, then tape

Most tiled PDF patterns include an overlap margin — a strip (typically 0.5 cm to 1 cm / ¼″ to ½″) printed on the right and bottom edges of each tile so the joining tiles can be placed on top. The overlap zone is usually marked with a dashed or dotted line.

You have two options:

Cut method: Cut the overlap margin off tile A2 along the dashed line, then butt the cut edge precisely against tile A1 and tape from behind. This is more accurate but irreversible.

Fold method: Fold the overlap margin of tile A2 back along the dashed line and align the fold to the edge of tile A1. Tape on top. This is reversible if you make a mistake, and preferred for tracing-paper assemblies.

Either method works — the alignment triangles keep you accurate regardless of which you choose.


What if the alignment triangles do not match up?

This is the most common assembly problem and almost always has one of three causes.

Cause 1: One or more tiles printed at the wrong scale

Check the test square on page 1. If it measures 9.7 cm instead of 10 cm, your printer applied a "fit to page" or "shrink to fit" scaling. Reprint with scaling explicitly turned off — see why your printed sewing pattern is the wrong size for printer-by-printer instructions.

Cause 2: A tile is rotated or flipped

Some tile pairs look identical at a glance but are actually mirror images. Hold the suspect tile up to a light source behind the assembled grid. If the triangle is pointing the wrong direction, flip the tile over.

Cause 3: Two tiles from different rows or columns have been swapped

Go back to the page map. Confirm the page number printed in the label box on each tile (usually in a corner or along the margin) matches the position in the grid. A tile labelled "B3" placed in the "A3" position will look almost right but the vertical triangles will not meet.


What if the pattern has no alignment triangles or page map?

Some very simple or early indie patterns were tiled without alignment aids — the pattern pieces span the full sheet and rely only on page numbers and the sewist's eye. In this case:

  1. Print the page map from the pattern company's website or assembly guide if one exists separately.
  2. Join tiles by matching the printed lines across the cut edges — pattern lines, grainlines, and notch marks should flow continuously from one tile to the next.
  3. Use a long ruler to confirm that a straight cutting line (the hem line or the centre front, for example) is truly straight across three or four tiles once assembled.

How page maps work with multi-size layered patterns

Layered PDF patterns — where each size is a separate layer you can toggle on or off in a PDF viewer — add one extra step to the page map workflow. The page map in a layered PDF typically shows all tiles for all sizes. Before printing, decide which size you are cutting and refer to the size chart to identify which tiles contain your size's lines.

Some pattern companies publish a separate, highlighted page map showing tiles by size — if yours does, download and print it. It will save you significant ink and assembly time.

Do I need to cut out all the tiles before assembling?+

No — and for large patterns, do not. Lay the tiles on the floor uncut first, confirm all triangles match, then tape. Only trim to the outer edge of the pattern pieces once the full assembly is confirmed correct. Cutting tiles down before checking alignment removes the reference edges you need.

My pattern has triangles on all four edges of every tile. Which ones do I match?+

Match the right-edge triangle of each tile to the left-edge triangle of the tile to its right. Match the bottom-edge triangle to the top-edge triangle of the tile below. You do not need to match all four sides simultaneously — work one direction at a time (horizontal first, then vertical).

Can I assemble the tiles without trimming the overlap at all?+

You can fold rather than cut, which is fully reversible. Many sewists prefer this because they can disassemble and reprint a single tile if they make an error. Fold the overlap margin back tightly along the dashed guide line and tape the fold to the adjacent tile.

The page map shows 24 tiles but my pattern only printed 20 pages. What happened?+

The most common cause is that your PDF viewer's print range excluded some pages, or that pages were skipped because they appeared blank (they may not be — some tiles contain only a small grainline or notch near the corner). Reprint the full page range. If the pattern is layered, make sure all size layers are visible before printing.

What tape is best for assembling the tiles once aligned?+

Transparent adhesive tape (such as Scotch Magic Tape or its equivalent) is the most widely used. It does not yellow, takes pencil marks if you need to adjust, and is available everywhere. What is the difference between alignment triangles and notches on the pattern pieces themselves?+

Alignment triangles are assembly aids on the tiled page edges — they help you join the tiles before you even cut fabric. Notches are construction marks on the seam lines of the pattern pieces themselves — they help you match seams when sewing fabric together. They look similar but serve completely different purposes at different stages of the process.
