Saving Ink and Paper When Printing PDF Sewing Patterns
The single biggest way to save ink and paper when printing a PDF sewing pattern is to print only the tiles that contain your size's cutting lines, in draft or grayscale mode, on standard 80 gsm copy paper. Most sewists print every page at full quality by default — that is rarely necessary and often doubles the cost and time of the job.
This guide covers every practical method for reducing waste, in order of impact, with nothing that compromises the dimensional accuracy your pattern depends on.
Why do PDF sewing patterns use so much ink and paper?
A standard A4-tiled PDF sewing pattern for a fitted jacket might run to 40–60 pages. At a typical home printer cost of £0.03–£0.06 per page (ink + paper combined, UK estimates) or $0.04–$0.08 per page (US estimates), a single pattern can cost £1.50–£4.80 / $2–$5 to print before you have cut a single piece of fabric.
Multiply that across a wardrobe's worth of patterns and the cost — and the stack of paper — adds up fast.
The good news: most of that waste is avoidable. The patterns themselves are designed to be printed in full, but nothing obliges you to follow that default.
Method 1: Print only the tiles you actually need
This is the highest-impact change you can make, and it requires no special software.
Every tiled PDF pattern comes with a page map — a grid diagram, usually on page 1, showing which page number occupies which position in the assembly grid. Your pattern pieces do not span every tile equally. A size 12 blazer might only touch 28 of the 52 tiles; a pair of trousers in a small size might concentrate in one diagonal band of the grid.
How to identify your tiles:
- Open the page map on page 1 of the PDF.
- Print the page map at small scale (or sketch it on paper) and mark the tile positions where your size's cutting lines appear. If the pattern is layered, turn off all layers except your size first — the cutting lines that remain visible tell you which tiles matter.
- Print only that page range, or enter individual page numbers in your print dialog (e.g. "2,5,6,7,8,11,12,13…").
Typical saving: 20–45% fewer pages, depending on how many sizes the pattern covers and which size you are cutting.
For multi-size patterns without visible layers, hold each tile up to a light source after printing — if it contains no cutting lines for your size, you can discard it before assembly rather than after.
Method 2: Switch to draft or economy print mode
Your printer's default quality setting — often called "Normal" or "Standard" — uses significantly more ink than necessary for a sewing pattern. Pattern lines are thin black or coloured vectors. They do not need photo-quality rendering.
Switch to Draft, Economy, or Fast mode in your printer's settings. The location varies:

What draft mode does: Reduces ink droplet density. Lines remain sharp enough to cut accurately. Only very faint dotted lines or light grey shading (used in some layered patterns for inactive size layers) may become harder to read — this is rarely a problem if you have already filtered to your size.
Typical saving: 30–50% ink reduction per page, with no meaningful loss of accuracy for cutting lines and seam allowances.
Method 3: Print in grayscale
Most PDF sewing patterns are black-and-white by design, but some indie patterns use coloured lines to distinguish sizes or construction markings. If your pattern uses colour and you do not need to distinguish multiple sizes visually (because you have already identified your tiles), print in grayscale.
Colour ink cartridges are significantly more expensive than black. Forcing grayscale routes all output through the black cartridge (or black toner on a laser printer).
Enable grayscale in your print dialog: look for Grayscale, Black and White, or Monochrome in the colour settings. On Mac, this is under the Colour tab in the print sheet. On Windows, it is under Printer Properties > Paper/Quality.
Important: If your pattern uses different colours to mark the cutting lines for each size and you are working from a non-layered PDF, switch to grayscale only after you have identified and marked your size's lines — they may become harder to distinguish once printed in grey tones.
Method 4: Use standard copy paper, not premium paper
Sewing patterns are temporary — they exist to be cut around, traced, or pinned to fabric, then stored or discarded. You do not need premium inkjet photo paper, thick card, or specialist paper.
Standard 80 gsm copy paper (the cheapest ream in any office supply shop) is perfectly adequate. It is thin enough to trace through, takes pencil and ink well, cuts cleanly, and is widely available in both A4 and US Letter.
The only time to consider heavier paper is if you intend to reuse the pattern pieces many times over many years — in which case 90–100 gsm paper adds durability without significantly increasing cost.
What not to use: Glossy paper. Ink sits on the surface rather than absorbing, which means wet hands smear lines, and the slippery surface makes tracing difficult. Some glossy papers also cause feeding problems in inkjet printers.
Method 5: Re-tile an A0 pattern to minimise blank tiles
If your pattern arrives as a large-format A0 (copyshop) PDF rather than a pre-tiled A4/Letter PDF, the way you tile it significantly affects how many pages you need to print.
A0 patterns tiled with default settings often produce many partially-blank tiles around the edges — tiles where the pattern pieces sit close to the centre of the sheet and the outer tiles are almost entirely empty. You do not need to print those tiles.
When you upload your A0 pattern to TileMyPattern, the output PDF includes a page map on page 1. Scan that map before printing and identify any tiles that are blank or contain only the page label and test square with no actual pattern lines. Skip those pages in your print dialog.
You can also adjust the overlap margin before generating your tiled PDF. A smaller overlap margin (0.5 cm / ¼″ rather than 1 cm / ½″) reduces the total area consumed by overlap zones across the full assembly, which can occasionally eliminate one row or column of edge tiles entirely on tight patterns.
Method 6: Use a copyshop for large patterns
For very large patterns — full coats, wedding dresses, historical costume — the economics sometimes flip. Printing 60 pages at home at £0.05 per page costs £3.00 in consumables, but also takes time, risks paper jams, and uses a significant amount of cartridge ink that shortens the life of your home printer.
A copyshop printing the A0 original on a wide-format printer typically charges £1.50–£4.00 per A0 sheet (UK) or $2–$6 per sheet (US), and the result is a single seamless sheet with no tiles to assemble. For a one-sheet pattern that would otherwise require 30+ home-printed tiles, the copyshop is often cheaper and always faster.

Method 7: Trace rather than cut
This is not strictly an ink-saving method — you still print the same pages — but it dramatically extends the usable life of each printout and means you never need to reprint a pattern.
Instead of cutting your pattern pieces directly from the printed tiles, trace each piece onto:
- Tracing paper (semi-transparent, widely available, inexpensive)
- Swedish tracing paper (a non-woven fabric-like material that can be pinned directly to fabric and even sewn into a toile)
- Pattern dot paper / dressmaker's carbon paper
Trace once, cut from the traced copy, and keep the printed original intact. The next time you make the same pattern in a different size or for a different person, you trace again rather than reprinting.
For patterns you make repeatedly — a favourite trouser block, a go-to top — this is the highest-value long-term saving you can make.
What not to sacrifice in the name of saving ink
One area where savings can genuinely cost you: the test square on page 1.
Always print page 1 at full quality and in whatever colour the test square is printed. Then measure it with a ruler before printing the rest of the pattern. The test square must measure exactly 10 cm × 10 cm (or 2 inches × 2 inches on US Letter patterns with a 2″ reference). If it does not, your printer is applying scaling — and every tile printed after it will be wrong, no matter how much ink you saved.
Never skip page 1. Never print it in a hurry and measure approximately. Five seconds with a ruler here prevents an entirely wasted print run.

Frequently asked questions
Will draft mode make my cutting lines too faint to see?+
For standard black cutting lines and notches, draft mode produces perfectly legible output on all major printer brands. The lines may appear very slightly lighter than normal mode, but they are sharp and accurate. If you find a specific line is too faint, you can reprint just that tile — you will still have saved ink on every other page.
Is it safe to print a sewing pattern double-sided to save paper?+
Technically possible but not recommended. Double-sided printing makes it much harder to hold tiles up to a light source to check for pattern lines, harder to trace through, and much harder to assemble because you cannot lay tiles flat on both sides simultaneously. The paper saving is real but the assembly headache usually is not worth it.
My pattern has 60 pages. Can I print every other page and fill in the gaps?+
No — that would mean missing tiles in the assembly grid. You can skip tiles that contain no pattern lines for your size (see Method 1), but you cannot skip tiles at random. Every tile that contains a cutting line for your size must be printed.
Does it matter which brand of paper I use?+
For most home printers, no. Standard copy paper from any office supply brand works equally well for sewing patterns. The specification to check is weight (80 gsm is standard) and size (A4 in most of the world; US Letter in North America). Avoid recycled paper with visible flecks or uneven texture — it can cause slight ink bleed that makes fine lines harder to read.

How do I know which tiles are blank before printing?+
Open the PDF in a viewer that shows page thumbnails (Adobe Acrobat Reader, or the sidebar in Mac Preview). Scroll through the thumbnails at small scale — blank or near-blank tiles are visually obvious.
